As the title says, this game is literally a game that has to be from Hell itself. It is so BAD when compared to its predecessors that I had a hard time believing it was made by Nintendo. Sure, Nintendo has made some questionable titles in the past, but THIS is by far the all time WORST Mario game out there.
For those who have played the ORIGINAL New Super Mario Bros. for the DS (I can’t even stand to call it that) you already know that it was everything that Mario fans were looking for. It was challenging and, most of all, FUN. It was a remake of the NEW Super Mario but it was the perfect remake.
The latest title, New Super Mario Bros. 2 however is evidently not made with the same goal of perfection in mind. Everything about it reeks of bad planning and design. Either in the years that have passed without playing New Super Mario Bros. I got really good at platformers, or this game isn’t what it should be.
The levels are absolutely bland. They feature not enough platforming and too much focus on coin collection. The game was marketed with the idea that you’d want to collect coins more than spend time perfecting your wall jumps or getting every star coin. IT is shown even in it’s TV Spot that the game was going to be entirely focused on coin collection. It’s clear that the developers were thinking more about placing coins than creating fun and challenging levels.

This game is clearly only for very young gamers. The levels are so simple you likely could play through the entire game losing no more than ten lives tops. Lets take the first world of NSMB (New Super Mario Bros.) for example. While it may have been a clone of the NES game it was still a fun and interesting world to play through. You’d likely die at least once in the first mini-castle alone. In NSMB 2 though, you can get passed the entire world without dying once and come out with easily 25 lives!
It feels like you don’t even have to try to take care in your jumps, the game hands you enough coins to make Mario’s pockets sag to the floor. It would be OK however, if the coins were no longer linked to Lives. The fact that you can get 200 coins per level with ease is just sad. It literally hurts to see such a bad Nintendo game.
If you really want to see just how bad Nintendo can get, New Super Mario Bros. 2 will gladly take your money. The game is not something that more experienced gamers would enjoy and would be hard pressed to entertain even the newest gamer. NSMB 2 shows us that there is a point where money is no longer interesting. I just hope that all those coins Mario’s collecting don’t cause inflation in the Mushroom Kingdom.
